Bali Map

Illustrative Bali Map and Area Guides of Bali.

What does the island of Bali look like, how big is it, what are the places of interest, can I travel around it in a day?

Bali is a small island, at the center of a long chain of islands that makes up the Republic of Indonesia. It is has a land area of approximately 5500 sq km, and its maximum width east to west is about 145km (90 miles), while from north to south its about 95km (60 miles) in width.

Bali is boarded to the west by Java, separated by the Bali Strait (approximately 2.5 km). Its easterly neighbor is the island of Lombok. The Lombok Strait separates Lombok and Bali, approximately 40 km wide.

The Bali Sea in the North and the Indian Ocean in the South bound it.

Bali Map - General Features

Bali is very mountainous, with deep ravines and ridgelines spreading out from the volcanoes, so most road routes follow the ridges. As a result most of the roads run around the coast, and parallel the ridgelines and rivers from north to south.

The Bali Map below shows the general features of Bali, including the major roads and major population centers:

Included within the Province of Bali are the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Cemingan, Pulau Serangan, and Nusa Lembongan, off the south east coast of Bali, and the small island of Pulau Mejangan off the north west coast.

Bali Map - Relief Features

Bali has a set of volcanoes, many over 2000 meters, stretching in a chain across the center of the island from east to west. The highest mountains (gunung) are Gunung Agung (over 3000m) at the eastern most end of the island, Gunung Batur (1700m) with a large crater lake, Gunung Catur (2090m) and Gunung Batukau (2200m).

The land to the north and south of this mountainous chain spreads in a series of ridges and ravines. Southern Bali is a series of gently sloping and flat alluvial plains, while the northern coast is narrow and rises steeply up into the mountains.

The far western region, the far eastern area, and the Bukit Peninsula to the far south are all arid areas, and are less populated.
